The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Sale Usman, has shared key milestones achieved by the commission under his leadership within the first 100 days in office.

In an exclusive interview with our Correspondent in Kano, Professor Sale Usman emphasizes the importance of learning from past leadership, saying, “In life, whoever precedes you in office, whether they made mistakes or recorded successes, you must pray for God to accept their good deeds and forgive their shortcomings. We are doing our best now and praying that Allah helps us to continue on the right path.”

He noted that his leadership draws lessons from the actions of his predecessors, adopting their successes and avoiding their errors. Reflecting on this, he said, “Within 100 days in office, we have reached agreements with airline companies to reduce air ticket prices compared to what was paid last year. We also concur on allowing payments in naira instead of dollars, which is a significant development.”

Professor Sale Usman reveals another major achievement: the recovery of over five billion naira for services not rendered to pilgrims during the 2023 Hajj. He highlighted this as part of the commission’s efforts to ensure accountability and safeguard the interests of Nigerian pilgrims.

On passport and visa-related matters, the NAHCON chairman disclosed that the commission has been working closely with the Nigeria Immigration Service to ensure timely issuance of passports for intending pilgrims. He stated, “They are cooperating with us, and we are witnessing significant progress in this regard.”

Regarding visa arrangements, Professor Sale Usman reassured stakeholders that the Saudi authorities are fully ready to address NAHCON’s concerns. He pointed out that the commission’s primary focus now is resolving issues surrounding Umrah visas. “Through the office of the Foreign Affairs Minister, we have invited the Saudi Minister of Hajj to Nigeria to address all outstanding matters related to Umrah,” he said.

The chairman also appealed to intending pilgrims to ensure timely payment of Hajj fares, stressing that delays disrupt plans and objectives. He called on those engaging in such practices to desist in the interest of a smooth and efficient operation.

With these efforts, Professor Abdullahi Sale Usman reaffirmed NAHCON’s commitment to improving the Hajj experience for all Nigerian pilgrims, while urging all stakeholders to support the commission’s initiatives.
