By Yusuf Kulloma The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has formally inaugurated the Principal Officers of the National Medical Team for the 2026 Hajj, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding the health and welfare of its pilgrims.
At the inauguration ceremony, the Chairman/CEO of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, underscored that the Commission remains resolute in enforcing strict health requirements in compliance with regulations set by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that only pilgrims who are medically certified as fit and free from designated illnesses will be approved for travel.
The Chairman directed that every medical clearance certificate must bear the registration number of the issuing physician with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
He cautioned that Saudi health authorities will carry out random verification at entry points, and any pilgrim found medically unfit risks immediate repatriation.
Officials found negligent in the discharge of their duties may also face disciplinary measures.
As part of enhanced safeguards, NAHCON has introduced an additional layer of medical screening at designated departure centres to serve as a final verification before airlift.
In his remarks, the Head of the National Medical Team, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar, pledged the team’s full adherence to the Commission’s directives. He outlined plans for comprehensive screening procedures, strengthened accountability mechanisms, and the deployment of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to ensure real-time monitoring and efficient reporting during the Hajj operations.
According to the Terms of Reference, the Principal Officers are mandated to provide strategic leadership and coordination of all medical activities in line with NAHCON guidelines; design operational frameworks and supervise personnel deployment; ensure high standards of clinical care, disease surveillance, infection prevention and control, emergency management, and appropriate referral systems in conformity with Saudi health regulations.
They are also tasked with overseeing medical logistics, pharmaceuticals, equipment, and personnel welfare to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery, while maintaining ethical and professional standards.
The inauguration signals NAHCON’s proactive approach to delivering a safe, compliant, and successful Hajj 2026 for Nigerian pilgrims
