As the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage progresses, there is good news from Madinah: not a single Nigerian pilgrim has died since the commencement of airlifts to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia two weeks ago.

This reassuring update came from Dr. Hamidu Muhammad Liman, Head of the Medical Mission of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), during a visit by the National Media Team to the Commission’s main clinic in Madinah.

According to Dr. Liman, while the overall health condition of pilgrims remains stable, mental health issues have been recorded in 11 individuals. He confirmed that some of the affected pilgrims have already been treated and discharged, while a few remain under observation and care.

Operating round the clock, the NAHCON clinic in Madinah is fully stocked with essential medications and managed by a team of dedicated health professionals. The clinic caters to a wide range of common illnesses affecting pilgrims, including malaria, high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory infections, ulcers, and general fatigue — conditions that make up over half of the clinic’s daily cases.

To expand access to care, NAHCON is finalizing preparations to open two additional medical outposts within the next 48 hours. These will complement the five hospitals already provided by Saudi authorities around the Prophet’s Mosque, ensuring that pilgrims can receive prompt care at all times.

Dr. Liman further explained that NAHCON’s partnership with the Saudi government enables Nigerian pilgrims to access both secondary and tertiary healthcare at no cost. This collaboration, he said, is a testament to the commitment of both countries to safeguard the health of all pilgrims.

Beyond direct medical intervention, NAHCON’s medical team is also focused on educating pilgrims on healthy practices during the pilgrimage. Dr. Liman advised pilgrims to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and use protective coverings such as hats or umbrellas — all to prevent heat-related illnesses which are a common risk during the hot season.

With its robust healthcare system already in action, NAHCON continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to the well-being of Nigerian pilgrims. From prevention to treatment, the Commission remains vigilant in its mission to ensure a safe, healthy, and spiritually fulfilling Hajj experience for all.
