In a historic milestone for religious inclusion and national unity, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday flagged off the first-ever official Hajj flight from the South East region at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.

The event, described as groundbreaking by the Vice President, marked the beginning of what he termed “a symbolic takeoff for unity, understanding, and inclusion” in Nigeria’s diverse religious landscape.

Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, religious leaders, and prospective pilgrims, Vice President Shettima expressed deep national pride and spiritual fulfilment. He said the ceremony was not only a logistical feat but a significant affirmation of the country’s commitment to religious harmony and equal representation.

“This is more than a ceremonial takeoff—it is a symbolic takeoff for unity, understanding, and inclusion,” he said. “This historic flight challenges lingering misperceptions, proving that religious diversity is not a threat, but a strength—one woven into the very fabric of our heritage.”

The Vice President commended Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State for his support and efforts in fostering religious tolerance. He also praised the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for its vision and coordination in making the flight possible.

“To our esteemed pilgrims: You are not just going on a sacred journey; you are carrying the prayers, dignity, and goodwill of our entire nation,” he said, urging them to act as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria in the Holy Land.

In attendance at the ceremony were the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar; Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs; Honourable Jafaru Muhammad Alli, Chairman of the House Committee on Hajj Affairs; and top officials of NAHCON, among other dignitaries.

As the pilgrims boarded the flight bound for Saudi Arabia, the Vice President reiterated the federal government’s commitment to a united Nigeria where all citizens, regardless of region or faith, are given equal opportunity and respect.

“May Almighty Allah bless our journey toward peace, understanding, and national unity,” he concluded
