The Chairman and CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, has reiterated his commitment to reducing the financial burden of Hajj for prospective pilgrims. Speaking during his recent visit to Kebbi State, he unveiled several cost-reduction initiatives while engaging with traditional rulers, Islamic scholars, and Hajj stakeholders.

During a meeting with Islamic scholars at the Kebbi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Professor Saleh emphasized the importance of collaboration in Hajj enlightenment campaigns. He highlighted the significant role of religious leaders in encouraging early payments by pilgrims and ensuring they fully understand the benefits of the new Hajj cost-reduction strategies.

Exchange Rate Relief for Pilgrims

Addressing the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Muhammadu Mera (CON), Professor Saleh revealed a major breakthrough in managing the cost of Hajj. He announced that NAHCON had reached an agreement with Hajj service providers, allowing payments to be made in Naira rather than dollars. This initiative, he noted, would significantly reduce the overall cost of Hajj seats, easing the financial strain on pilgrims.

Hajj Savings Scheme

Another cost-saving initiative mentioned during the visit was the “Hajj Savings Scheme.” Pilgrims can gradually save for their Hajj journey through participating banks, such as Jaiz Bank, over a period of time until they reach the required amount. This scheme aims to make Hajj affordable and accessible to more Nigerians, ensuring no prospective pilgrim is left behind due to financial constraints.

2023 Hajj Refund

Professor Saleh also highlighted NAHCON’s achievement in refunding pilgrims for services not rendered during the 2023 Hajj. Pilgrims across Nigeria received ₦61,080 each, a move that underscores the Commission’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Support from Traditional Rulers and Scholars

The Chairman’s efforts received overwhelming support from the traditional rulers and Islamic scholars he met. The Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar (CON), and the Emir of Argungu commended the initiatives and pledged to support their dissemination. The Emir of Argungu further honored Professor Saleh with the traditional title of “Kuliyan Kabin Argungu” in recognition of his service to the Muslim Ummah.

Professor Saleh described the role of religious scholars as critical to the success of Hajj operations. “With the support of the Ulamas, we can achieve monumental success in implementing these reforms,” he stated during his meeting with the scholars.

Kebbi Pilgrims Board Commends NAHCON

The Chairman of the Kebbi State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Faruku Aliyu Yaro Enabo (Jagaban Gwandu), expressed delight at the Chairman’s visit and the Commission’s reforms. He pledged to intensify efforts to ensure the success of the 2025 Hajj preparations.
