By Abdulkadir Aliyu Shehu The Gombe State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced the distribution of two 23-kilogram luggage bags to 965 pilgrims from the state as part of preparations for their return journey to Nigeria following the completion of the 2026 Hajj exercise in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The distribution exercise, which began in Makkah on Thursday, was organised by officials of the board to ensure a smooth and orderly arrangement for the transportation of pilgrims’ personal belongings ahead of their scheduled airlift back home.
Speaking during the exercise, officials of the board said the initiative was designed to reduce the challenges often associated with luggage handling during return operations and to ensure compliance with airline baggage regulations.
The officials explained that each pilgrim would receive two standardised 23-kilogram luggage bags approved for check-in by the designated air carrier responsible for transporting Nigerian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia.
According to the board, the early distribution of the bags would provide pilgrims with ample time to properly arrange and package their belongings before the commencement of return flights to Nigeria.
The officials further stated that the measure formed part of broader logistical arrangements introduced by the board to improve the welfare, comfort, and safety of pilgrims throughout the Hajj operations.
Some of the pilgrims who spoke with journalists in Makkah expressed appreciation to the Gombe State Government and the welfare board for what they described as proactive planning and effective coordination.
A pilgrim from Gombe Local Government Area said the timely distribution of the luggage bags would help minimise the confusion and delays usually experienced during departure preparations in Saudi Arabia.
Another pilgrim commended the board for maintaining regular communication with pilgrims and for guiding baggage requirements and airport procedures ahead of the return journey.
The board also advised pilgrims to avoid carrying prohibited items and urged them to strictly adhere to the approved luggage weight limit in order to prevent delays and additional charges during airport screening and boarding processes.
Officials disclosed that arrangements had already been concluded with relevant Saudi authorities, airline operators, and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria to ensure the smooth evacuation of pilgrims back to the country after the completion of Hajj rites.
They noted that medical teams, accommodation officials, and other support personnel remained on the ground to continue providing essential services to pilgrims pending the commencement of return flights.
The Gombe State contingent is among thousands of Nigerian pilgrims currently participating in the 2026 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia under the supervision of state pilgrims’ welfare boards and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.
The distribution exercise was conducted peacefully under the supervision of senior officials of the board, with pilgrims seen receiving the luggage bags in an orderly manner at designated collection points in Makkah.
Observers said the development reflected the ongoing efforts of the Gombe State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board to strengthen operational efficiency and enhance the overall experience of pilgrims from the state during the 2026 Hajj exercise.
