The return airlift of Nigerian pilgrims from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia commenced on Saturday with the departure of 560 pilgrims from Nasarawa State, marking the beginning of the final phase of the 2026 Hajj exercise.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) disclosed that three additional flights were scheduled to depart later in the day as arrangements continue for the smooth transportation of pilgrims back to Nigeria after spending about 30 days in the Holy Land.
In a statement issued by the Commission’s management, pilgrims were advised to strictly comply with the approved baggage allowance, which permits two checked-in bags weighing 23 kilograms each and one hand luggage not exceeding eight kilograms.
NAHCON stressed that multiple hand luggage would not be allowed, urging pilgrims to cooperate with airport and airline officials to ensure hitch-free departure procedures.
The Commission further revealed that luggage screening would be conducted 48 hours before each flight departure to facilitate early delivery of baggage upon arrival in Nigeria and to expedite clearance processes at the airports.
Pilgrims were also cautioned against packing Zamzam water and other prohibited items in their luggage, warning that such items would be confiscated during screening exercises.
According to the Commission, prohibited items include flammable materials such as lighter fluid, lithium batteries and power banks placed in checked baggage, aerosols, excessive quantities of liquids, and sharp objects carried in hand luggage.
NAHCON noted that compliance with the regulations would help prevent delays, avoid baggage tampering, and ensure a seamless return journey for pilgrims.
Meanwhile, the Commission expressed appreciation to the four designated airlines handling the return operations for commencing services as scheduled despite concerns over the high cost of aviation fuel.
NAHCON also reassured the airlines of the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting them and ensuring that they do not incur losses during the airlift operation.
The Commission commended the cooperation and understanding demonstrated by the carriers and pledged continued collaboration to guarantee the successful completion of the 2026 Hajj return exercise.
