By Abdulkadir Aliyu Shehu The Gombe State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced the early distribution of hand luggage and uniforms to 965 intending pilgrims, marking a significant milestone in the state’s preparations for the 2026 Hajj exercise.

The exercise, held at the Board’s headquarters in Gombe State, signals the formal rollout of critical logistics ahead of the annual pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Speaking during the distribution, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Sa’adu Hassan, stated that the items were issued to pilgrims in the international category as part of comprehensive readiness measures for the exercise.

He noted that the early distribution underscores the Board’s commitment to meticulous planning, improved coordination, and timely execution of all Hajj-related activities.

According to him, the exercise followed several weeks of intensive orientation and training conducted before the commencement of the Ramadan fast.

The training programme was temporarily suspended to allow pilgrims to observe Ramadan and was subsequently resumed across various local government areas after the fasting period.

Alhaji Hassan further explained that the early commencement of activities has positioned Gombe State ahead of many states in the federation in terms of Hajj preparedness.

He added that the proactive approach adopted by the Board is aimed at ensuring a seamless, well-organised, and stress-free pilgrimage experience for all intending pilgrims.

As part of the preparations, he disclosed that a comprehensive manifest of all registered pilgrims is being compiled for submission to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.

The manifest, he explained, will be forwarded to Saudi Arabian authorities to facilitate adequate planning, particularly in the areas of accommodation, transportation, and other essential services.

In a notable development, airlines are expected to issue air tickets alongside identification cards containing detailed accommodation information for each pilgrim.

The cards will clearly indicate hotel names and locations in Medina, thereby enabling pilgrims to easily identify and access their designated accommodation upon arrival.

Describing the innovation as a breakthrough, the Executive Secretary said it would significantly reduce confusion, delays, and logistical challenges that pilgrims previously encountered during hotel allocation.

He added that the distribution of uniforms and hand luggage represents the final phase of material preparation ahead of the airlift of pilgrims.

Attention, he said, will now shift to health-related requirements, including immunisation and final medical screening in line with guidelines from relevant health authorities.

He further emphasised that female pilgrims within the reproductive age bracket would undergo re-evaluation to ensure that no pregnant woman undertakes the journey, in compliance with established health regulations.

On logistics, the Board introduced a revised luggage policy allowing two bags per pilgrim comprising an 8-kilogram hand luggage and up to 32 kilograms of checked baggage in line with international travel standards.

Alhaji Hassan acknowledged minor challenges relating to the payment of Hadiyah, noting that Jaiz Bank is yet to announce the official cost, but expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved before the commencement of airlift operations.

The Executive Secretary, on behalf of the Board, expressed profound appreciation to the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for his unwavering support, visionary leadership, and consistent guidance, which have greatly enhanced the planning and execution of Hajj operations in the state.

He particularly commended the Governor’s sustained commitment to the welfare of pilgrims, as well as his administration’s emphasis on efficiency, transparency, and improved service delivery in Hajj management.

The Board also acknowledged that the Governor’s provision of an enabling environment, institutional support, and necessary resources has positioned Gombe State as a model for early preparation and effective coordination of Hajj activities in Nigeria.

It added that his hands-on leadership style, moral encouragement, and strategic direction have boosted the confidence of both officials and pilgrims, ensuring a more organised and seamless process.

The Board urged intending pilgrims to reciprocate these efforts by remaining patient, disciplined, law-abiding, and spiritually focused as they prepare to undertake the sacred journey.
