The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has unveiled a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at aligning Nigeria’s Hajj operations with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, promising a more efficient, transparent and technology-driven pilgrimage system ahead of the 2027 Hajj.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Hajj Stakeholders’ Summit in Abuja, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, said the Commission had commenced preparations for the 2027 pilgrimage immediately after the conclusion of this year’s exercise.
He explained that the reform agenda is designed to modernise Hajj administration by embracing digital innovation, strengthening accountability and improving service delivery to Nigerian pilgrims.
According to him, key reforms include the development of a single National Pilgrimage Digital Platform for Hajj and Umrah registration, payment tracking and service delivery, as well as the enforcement of a predictable Hajj calendar through early planning.
The NAHCON boss also announced plans to decentralise operations by giving State Pilgrims Welfare Boards and licensed tour operators greater responsibility for pilgrims’ services, while the Commission focuses on regulation and oversight.
Other initiatives include stricter service standards, enhanced financial transparency, comprehensive regulation of Umrah operations, professional training through the Hajj Institute of Nigeria, and the introduction of a standard national curriculum for pilgrims’ education in major Nigerian languages.
Ambassador Yusuf stressed that Nigeria must adapt to Saudi Arabia’s rapidly evolving pilgrimage management system under Vision 2030 to secure better service packages, earlier contracting opportunities and improved pilgrimage quotas.
He noted that Hajj management across the world has become increasingly technology-driven, requiring data-based planning, professional certification of officials, strict compliance with crowd management schedules and year-round preparations.
The NAHCON Chairman disclosed that all State Pilgrims Welfare Boards and licensed tour operators had already been directed to commence preparations for the 1448AH/2027 Hajj.
He added that resolutions from the stakeholders’ summit would form part of the Commission’s roadmap for the 2027 Hajj and guide future engagements with the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
