The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has acknowledged several shortcomings recorded during the 2026 Hajj operation, declaring that service providers who fail to meet contractual obligations will henceforth face consequences.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, made the declaration while addressing participants at the 2026 Hajj Stakeholders’ Summit in Abuja.
While expressing gratitude for the successful completion of the pilgrimage, Ambassador Yusuf said the summit was convened to critically assess both the achievements and failures of the exercise in order to improve future operations.
He noted that although the Commission recorded an orderly airlift, improved visa processing through the Nusuk platform, enhanced medical services and stronger coordination with State Pilgrims Welfare Boards and licensed tour operators, several operational challenges also emerged.
Among the shortcomings identified were the circumvention of medical screening by 109 pilgrims, lapses in catering services in the Masha’er, weaknesses in service-provider compliance, accommodation and transportation bottlenecks, and shortcomings in monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.
The NAHCON Chairman revealed that the Commission had already commenced post-Hajj reconciliation with Saudi service providers, invoking accountability clauses contained in existing contracts.
He warned that the era of contractual failures without consequences had ended, stressing that service providers would be held accountable and that pilgrims deserved compensation wherever poor services were rendered.
“Performance will henceforth determine patronage,” he declared.
Ambassador Yusuf described the stakeholders’ summit as a forum for accountability, urging participants to openly identify operational weaknesses and propose practical solutions rather than offering praise.
He added that recommendations from the summit would be fully implemented and incorporated into the Commission’s preparations for the 2027 Hajj, with the ultimate goal of providing Nigerian pilgrims with more organised, dignified and efficient services.
