The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) experienced a transformative year in 2024, marked by operational successes, leadership changes, and steadfast efforts to enhance the Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims. Despite challenges, the Commission achieved remarkable milestones that strengthened its reputation as a reliable facilitator of the annual pilgrimage.

NAHCON’s meticulous planning and execution of the 2024 Hajj operations resulted in several notable achievements:

1. Visa Issuance: For the first time, every pilgrim received their visa ahead of the commencement of airlift operations. This ensured a smooth start to the pilgrimage and reduced stress for pilgrims and stakeholders alike.

2. Airlift Operations: The outbound journey for over 52,000 pilgrims was completed by June 9, 2024, well ahead of Saudi Arabia’s deadline. The return flights commenced as scheduled on June 22 and concluded by July 16, five days ahead of schedule, highlighting NAHCON’s operational efficiency.

3. Pilgrim Welfare in Muna: During their stay in Muna, pilgrims were provided with complimentary gifts, including toiletries, handheld fans, and other essentials, enhancing their comfort during the spiritual rites.

4. Health Support: NAHCON secured free drugs, including malaria, blood pressure, and diabetes medications, which were issued to pilgrims that visited the assigned clinics with health complaints during the 2024 Hajj. This initiative ensured that medical needs were met promptly, improving the overall welfare of pilgrims.

Despite challenges posed by fluctuating dollar rates, NAHCON successfully managed the 2024 Hajj operations without compromising the quality of services. The ₦90 billion subsidy provided by the Federal Government played a crucial role in stabilizing Hajj costs and alleviating the financial burden on pilgrims.

The Commission addressed previous concerns by disbursing refunds from the 2023 Hajj to State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and private tour operators. This action restored trust among stakeholders and reinforced NAHCON’s commitment to accountability and transparency.

In August 2024, Malam Jalal Ahmad Arabi was relieved of his duties as Chairman/CEO of NAHCON on August 19, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu subsequently appointed Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman as the new Chairman/CEO.

Professor Usman has taken decisive steps since his appointment, including:

• Early Preparations for 2025 Hajj: Regular Virtual Meetings with Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, inauguration of Committees such as Aviation Screening and Monitoring Committee, Accommodation Screening Committee, Committee to Review the National Medical Team Guidelines, scheduling a pre-Hajj visit to Saudi Arabia on January 13, 2025, to sign MOUs with the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and service providers for accommodation, catering, and transportation.

• Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement: Strengthening partnerships with State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and private tour operators through regular consultations and familiarisation visits to the six geo- political zones of the Country to seek support from State Governors, Traditional Rulers and prominent Islamic Scholars/ Leaders.

• Focus on Pilgrim Welfare: Implementing reforms to improve the comfort and safety of pilgrims, ensuring timely services, and addressing challenges head-on.

Despite fluctuating dollar rates and public scrutiny, NAHCON demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The Commission’s proactive measures ensured that these challenges did not disrupt the overall Hajj operations.

As 2024 draws to a close, NAHCON is well-positioned for a successful 2025 Hajj season. Early preparations, leadership reforms, and policy initiatives underscore the Commission’s renewed commitment to excellence.

NAHCON’s dedication to providing a spiritually enriching and memorable Hajj experience remains unwavering. With lessons learned and a foundation of achievements, 2025 promises to be a year of even greater accomplishments, ensuring that the sacred journey is accessible and fulfilling for all Nigerian pilgrims.
