NAHCON Approves Two 23kg Checked Bags for 2026 Hajj Pilgrims

In a major policy shift aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has approved a new baggage allowance for the 2026 Hajj exercise, granting pilgrims two checked-in bags of 23 kilogrammes each, in addition to one 8kg hand luggage on their return journey.

Hajj Chronicles gathered that the directive applies to all airlines officially approved for the 2026 Hajj airlift and is contained in the letters of appointment issued to the participating carriers.

According to documents sighted by Hajj Chronicles, the instruction was formally conveyed in a letter dated December 23, 2025, signed by the NAHCON Commissioner for Operations, Prince Anofiu Olarenwaju Elegushi, detailing the scope of engagement and operational expectations for the airlines.
End of the 32kg Single-Bag Policy

The new arrangement brings an end to the long-standing policy that restricted pilgrims to one checked-in bag of 32kg and a single 8kg hand luggage.

Under the 2026 Hajj guidelines, each pilgrim will now be entitled to two checked bags of 23kg each, raising the total checked baggage allowance to 46kg, excluding cabin baggage.

Alignment with International Standards
With the introduction of the two-piece baggage policy, NAHCON has aligned Nigerian pilgrims with global aviation standards commonly enjoyed by pilgrims from other countries.

The decision also addresses persistent concerns raised by Nigerian pilgrims over restrictive luggage limits and unequal treatment, particularly when sharing flights with international pilgrims. Pilgrims travelling under State Pilgrims Welfare Boards will now enjoy the same baggage privileges as privately sponsored and international pilgrims.
Relief for Pilgrims, Reduced Airport Stress

The new directive is expected to significantly ease luggage handling for pilgrims, improve management of personal belongings and gifts, and reduce cases of excess baggage charges at airports.

Hajj Chronicles understands that NAHCON will closely monitor compliance by the airlines to ensure full implementation of the policy during the 2026 Hajj operations.

This remains a developing story. Hajj Chronicles will continue to provide timely updates as more details emerge on implementation and enforcement
